Alex is quickly becoming a backseat driver, telling me when the crossroads are clear of cars coming so I can go from the stop sign. He knows what speed limit signs mean. He knows the traffic signals. He pays attention to the digital compass and temperature gauge above the rearview mirror and likes to announce when we’re traveling east, west, south, or north – and he loves showing off with those big numbers of eighty-eight degrees and he knows what it all means. I love it.

IMG_8341.jpg

I played with Alex in his room with all his Little People and Thomas the Train sets. We talked and interacted and it was so wonderful to spend some play time with my little man. He told me all the characters’ names and what all his vehicles did and where they went and why.

I loved that play time and really need to do it more and not think about what I could be doing that I feel may be more productive. He needs that Mama time.

Now that the month is almost over…it snuck on by me! We were super busy with camps, conventions, and just life…I wish I had done some fun art projects with the toy truck wheels and played more with ramps and blocks.

Tori loves helping Alex and it gives her confidence in reading to teach him words. She often reads to him before bed. She doesn’t get so anxious reading to her little brother as she does with the rest of us.

This work was dear to my heart. My first car was 1974 Volkswagen Beetle. It was rusty and orange, but we got it fixed and painted it yellow. The cards are from PreKinders.

Tori set up the car cards and Alex picked out the correct colors. Tori helped him place the cards in the chart carefully.

These vehicle matching mini-puzzles were a hit! I separated them into 3 sections: front, middle, and rear to make it less overwhelming.

Getting Started with Homeschool

How We Homeschool Series

Here are the topics:

Part 1: Getting started with homeschool (preschool)

Part 2: Determine your teaching method and your kids’ learning styles

Part 3: Curriculum planning with multiple kids

Part 4: Homeschooling as a lifestyle

Getting Started with Homeschool Series - Homeschool Preschool

Many readers didn’t know where to begin. Let me share my story.

I never planned to homeschool.

I was lost when I realized that God was slamming every door in. my. face. and forcing me to homeschool Elizabeth. I had been a public school teacher. All my in-laws were public school teachers.

We moved out-of-state – and I couldn’t find a job – and I couldn’t find a school for Liz – and I was pregnant with Tori -I didn’t know what to do!

Elizabeth has an October birthday. The school wouldn’t accept her for another year for Kindergarten. I knew in the back of my mind that Liz would be turning 6 about a month into that school year. She would be bored out of her mind and be a behavior problem. She had corrected her preschool teacher! I worried about her future success in school.

Since we were both home, I told my husband we would just homeschool for a few years. That sealed the deal and there was no turning back. She was reading and doing work several grade levels ahead in six months. She was tested at the end of that first year and her reading level was above 3rd grade. The family got off my back after that.

So, what did I do that first year?

I gathered all these great materials and we did Kindergarten workbooks and readers and an old math book from my mother-in-law. Liz completed Kindergarten in 6 months.

Now what?

apple festival San Antonio

I read The Well-Trained Mind cover to cover.

I have no idea how I first came across it. I got Story of the World and followed the plan for 1st grade to the letter. Liz loved First Language Lessons.  She loved all the activities in Story of the World. She loved copywork. She loved recitation and dictation and narration. She was a model homeschool child. She had used A Beka in preschool, so we continued with some of their workbooks since she loved them so much.

I joined all the homeschool groups. In our town, there were many and they had park days on various days of the week. We signed up for amazing art lessons at this little local place. Lessons were completed easily in a couple hours each morning. We went to the library for story time and on field trips. She was just a small 5-year-old, so we blended in with the preschoolers. {until she opened her mouth, that is.}

When Tori came into our lives, we incorporated tot school when she was old enough to do play. Then Kate and Alex joined our family and we continued to do tot school and preschool and Montessori activities.

Next year will be our first official school year with Kate! I plan to go classical style with Tori and Kate, similar to what I did with Liz in the beginning, but with some changes, because every child learns differently. {More info on that in the next post.}

Here are my recommendations about where to begin…

Research. Pray. Ask friends, acquaintances, bloggers {like me!} how they homeschool. Realize they’re not you. Pray with your husband and children for direction. Go to homeschool conventions to see what’s out there. Pray some more. Go to the library and get books on homeschooling and education.

Read some articles on Ambleside Online about beginning school – and great reading lists! They offer an entire K-12 curriculum free on public domain. It’s very advanced and lots of reading lists.

You can homeschool virtually free – especially in the primary years. Many of the sites listed have free or very inexpensive printables. {More on this in part 3!}

Alex is almost 3 years old! just a little over a month away…

Alex sorted candy hearts by color. Tori watched for a chance to eat some.

He told me here, rather matter of fact: “I won’t color if you take a picture.” Touché.

Behold the cuteness of this rascal. And that superb tracing before he cut it out!

Monkey pattern matching. He’s sure smart and has no trouble with preschool work! He’s not even three yet and I can barely keep him interested in most work that his sisters begged for more at this age. He certainly needs handwriting work. He love to cut and paste and he just started liking coloring pictures. I often can’t tell if he’s bored, frustrated, or just plain ornery.

He is precious. and hilarious.

Yes, I know this is old news, but I just want to share it with you. I forgot to post it! Perhaps you can use it next year or something…better late than never.

Alex loved this Mash the Monster ABC game.

The sisters or I would call out a letter and Alex whacked it with the fly swatter. He was a whole lot gentler than I expected!

He’s starting to like the bottle cap letters activities.

He loves tracing the lines. And these lines were orange (his favorite color!). How much better could it get?

He just wanted to start at the bottom of the page and work up for some reason.

He tried cutting this practice page, but gave up when he thought it was too hard.

I raided the dollar spot at Target. Lots of great stuff!
Fall Sensory Bin
H is for hippo. We started I for Iguana. We watched videos on BBC about hippos and iguanas. He actually narrated to Dad what he learned!

These little beetles took over the park. They were all different shades and patterns of red and orange and black. I think they’re fire bugs. Perfect name.
Fire Bugs
Alex loves watching Abby and Dinosaur Train and Diego.
Watching Sesame Street
Alex says he’s DONE WITH NAPS. Lord help me.
Alex’s attention span is about non-existent. I hope that changes over the next few months. Our schedule has been crazy keeping up with him and trying to get the girls’ schooling completed and chores done. He begs for constant companionship. He will not play alone so someone always has to be with him. This makes for sporadic lessons. Right now, it’s barely working for us.
Tori, Katie, and I do morning school with Alex while Liz gets her math, Greek, and other work completed. When she’s ready, she takes Alex outside or somewhere to play while I get some reading and lessons done with the girls. Then we have lunch and we try to get “one more thing” done after that. Some days we do. Often, Liz completes some history or science and the girls play with Alex.
So, this means no rest time or alone time for Mama or the girls.

Can you say exhausted?

Letter A Work

Letter A Work

Alex already knows all his letters, upper and lowercase, their sounds, his numbers 1-13, all colors (even the weird ones)…so we’re beginning preschool a bit early. He turns 3 on April 1. He’s just started showing an interest in tracing, writing, and making words!

We started calendar time back up again. The girls have a cursive notebook and Alex has his tot time notebook: letters, numbers, and shapes to trace. He LOVES it!

tracing letter A

Alex loves to play Starfall with big sister. By the time I got the picture, he was already through letter F, oh well.

Starfall

Wikki Stix alphabet cards are super fun!

wikki stix letter A card

Here’s one of our favorite alphabet resources. It’s fun and comes with foam pieces to make letters.

How to Build an A book

We working through Raising Rock Stars Preschool, but also still loving the Animal ABCs. And of course, I didn’t get any pictures of Alex completing his A work for those! ugh

We ate lots of apples. The kids prefer Honey Crisp, which, of course, are the most expensive! We did an amazing apple unit back in September.

eating apples

Tori helps Alex with the Letter A Find It bin. He found the pictures and she found the words.

Letter A scavenger hunt

Alex loves puzzles and he often takes a break from all our school time to sit quietly and do a puzzle alone.

letter puzzle

And why reinvent the wheel when Carisa does such amazing work? Here are her letter A ideas…and a Letter A Pinterest Board

cutting alligators

He loves All About Reading prelevel 1. Liz usually plays with Ziggy.

A is for alligator. Alex really liked all our alligator works.

A is For Alligator

Along came Mr. Alligator, quiet as can be, and snapped that monkey right out of that tree!

Alligator and Monkeys song

The big alligator is searching for monkeys to eat in our science bin from last week.

Alligator Play

still obsessed with cutting paper…yes, that’s a pink desk. Hand-me-down from sisters. It’s ok because he’s Superman.

Alligator Work

Apples! baby apple, daddy apple…and all those other ones. Eventually, Alex named them all after our family.

Apple sizing

cutting food is still a favorite

apples again! Alex really liked matching the A apples to the tree

Matching A on the Apple Tree

They’re not really cherries…they’re apples, duh

This is how Alex ate his couscous. With a little cymbal clapping cow toy. sigh

Look! coloring and writing! for about 5 whole seconds.

Then we searched for shamrocks around the room and wrote the number 4 different ways on our papers! This was great fun!

I love how creative the girls were! I gave them freedom to make up patterns. They turned the shamrocks backwards, sideways, and upside down to make different patterns! Then they told me the patterns: AB, ABC, ABBA, ABCD, AAB, etc.

We have a fun Irish dinner at church tonight. We’re making Irish lamb stew and corned beef and cabbage and soda bread!
We graphed with Lucky Charms cereal!

We read some amazing books and poetry about St. Patrick’s Day. Oh, how we love poetry!
