Hawaii Unit Study

September 14, 2020 By Jennifer Lambert 2 Comments

We lived in Hawaii for three years. We loved it.

But we realized we were temporary, other, haoles in Paradise, and it wasn’t our land. Looking back, I realize there was so much more I could have learned, done, thought.

My girls were very young and I can make amends now as we learn about the history and culture of Hawaii. The kids don’t even remember it.

Our Travels Around Hawaii

  • Big Island Hawaii with Kids
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
  • Maui with Kids
  • Oahu with Kids
  • Honolulu with Kids
  • North Shore with Kids
  • Kaneohe with Kids
  • Our Kaua’i Weekend
  • Our Ni’ihau Day Trip
  • Makahiki – Thanksgiving in Hawaii
  • Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

My son chose the place of his birth for our homeschool geography fair.

We still had a lot of Hawaiian items from when we lived there.

He was so happy to talk to people about his birth place!

Hawaiian history and culture is complicated. We watched the news and social media with trepidation as the National Guard moved in on protestors at Mauna Kea for the site location of the Thirty Meter Telescope. We agree with Native Hawaiians and feel love and aloha in our hearts for them and their land. Some books may seem offensive to people unfamiliar with Hawaii and colonialism that has affected these beautiful islands and people.

Vietnam Unit Study

There’s so much more to the history and culture than what the news shows us.

I want my children to understand Asian history in our chronological studies of world history. I don’t want their education based on American stereotypes.

Our {evangelical and expensive} history curriculum was a little disappointing after WWII, so I had to research and find my own material to teach my kids about history that happened in my parents’ lifetime.

Vietnam Unit Study

I want to learn real history along with my kids, not just an American or white perspective.

There’s so much more to Vietnam culture and history than the conflict that the United States participated in during the 1960s and early 1970s.

Vietnam War Veterans Day: March 29 is a fitting choice for a day honoring Vietnam veterans. It was chosen to be observed in perpetuity as March 29, 1973, was the day United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished and also the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam.  In addition, on and around this same day Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war.

Ohio Notebooking Pages

July 5, 2017 By Jennifer Lambert 20 Comments

So, it’s official.

We’re moving to Ohio this summer.

We threw out our printables, but I still like them occasionally, like loooong plane and car rides.

I found some fun Ohio state notebooking pages to learn about our new home. We’ve lived in Germany for three glorious years, so it will probably be a bit of a culture shock going back to the States!

We haven’t gone to church in a while, so we’re excited to find a new church home. Thank you for praying for us!

Read about the PCS grief process for our military family.

We have so many fun things planned for our new home!

5 things we’ve missed about the United States:

  1. Chick-Fil-A (and it’s just as good as we remember!)
  2. Air conditioning (but it’s really cold to us now!)
  3. Potatoes (the ones in mainland Europe are sweeter.)
  4. Window Screens (yay for keeping out bugs!)
  5. Pay at the pump gasoline!

5 things we’ve noticed now that we’re back in our passport country:

  1. American flags. Everywhere. It’s like we don’t want to forget where we are.
  2. The roads are dirty, full of pot holes, and not clearly marked. Drivers aren’t as courteous or knowledgeable. We miss the Autobahn!
  3. It’s very loud and bright, everywhere, all the time. So many ads and commercials.
  4. So many mediocre things seem so expensive.
  5. There are few good beers here. What’s with all the IPA and fruity beer?

The Ohio flag is pretty cool:

Ohio’s state flag was adopted in 1902. The Ohio burgee, as the swallowtail design is properly called, was designed by John Eisemann. The large blue triangle represents Ohio’s hills and valleys, and the stripes represent roads and waterways.

We’re settling in to Ohio really well. It’s so pretty here! Now, we just need to go pick up our minivan from the port and I’ll be all set.

Africa Continent Box

April 18, 2013 By Jennifer Lambert 2 Comments

I got 7 photo boxes at Michael’s last year during a major sale.

Alex used our Arctic and Antarctic box during our winter and snow unit a couple months ago. And you can see the girls in action with Kindergarten Antarctica last year.

Alex recently started asking questions about African animals, so I chose to capitalize on the learning excitement to create a unit for the kids!

We have subscriptions to Ranger Rick, Zoobooks, and all the National Geographic magazines. I found the ones that went with Africa and put them in a basket.

paper doll

Here is the box in progress. I cut out all the flags for matching and we have more printables now, including the lovely paper doll above.

Montessori Geography Africa Continent Box

I gathered some fun books from the library and printed out some fun activities and coloring pages.

Alex loves playing with the animals and coloring.

coloring Africa page

Tori  and Kate loved coloring and doing mazes and studying animals. Kate wants to work with animals when she grows up. She carries around an animal encyclopedia and just about has it memorized.

We’ve been watching Nature on Netflix and the girls love telling me what we’ve already studied – animals, climates, places. I love it.

Want some resources? Of course you do.

Printables (some cost)

  • education.com (I don’t have a membership here, but I get all sorts of great printables!)
  • abcteach.com (I do have a membership here and I love it!)

Salt Dough Maps

Fun Dyed Salt Dough Maps for Geography

We made lovely maps of landforms for geography study.

We used the book Geography from A to Z for reference. The toothpicks were for labels.

Landform Salt Dough Maps

Always fun to let them get them their hands dirty mixing the flour, salt, and water! Sticky!

Fun sensory play.

Mixing Salt Dough

I separated the dough into three sections and dyed them yellow for desert, blue for water, and green for land.

Alex liked using play dough tools.

Making a Salt Dough Map

Kate was very particular placing her land and water dough.

Salt Dough Map

Tori loved the hands on activity!

Salt Dough Map Play

Liz liked rolling out her dough.

Rolling out the Desert

We placed toothpicks in parts of the wet dough maps.

After the maps dried, we glued handwritten flags to the toothpicks, labeling the land formations.

It will dry and harden overnight. You can add painted details!

How do you make geography fun?

Also see this salt dough map of the Nile River Delta. Check out no-bake cookie dough maps and chocolate chip cookie maps.
