One of our favorite field trips this year was Johnston Farm. We enjoyed the museum and canal boat ride.

Johnston Farm Museum

Exhibits trace the story of the Eastern Woodland Indians of Ohio and the Pickawillany village site.

We loved learning about the Native Americans of the area.

The exhibits were very respectful of and educational about how Europeans exploited the Natives.

There were several sections about Indian stereotypes throughout history and how we still exploit them today in sports and advertising. It’s so infuriating.

We learned all about Ohio canals. Then we got to ride in one!

General Harrison Canal Boat

A replica 70-foot-long canal boat used for transportation of passengers and cargo in the 19th century.

The kids wanted to do some fun fall activities.

It’s getting harder the older they get. Most of the fun things seem to be for little kids.

We went to the homeschool day at Pot-Luck Greenhouse.

We went for the corn maze. It was ok. It was near our house, and we went through a couple times. There were activity books.

We’re already lost!

I have this same shot when Alex was 18 months old in Utah!

I love this shot of the bridge!

Fun games!

We took a hay ride to choose pumpkins. They were already cut, to my kids’ disappointment.

We took a homeschool field trip to Sunshine Pumpkin Farm.

We travel a lot in fall, so this was exciting for us to do something a little more normal.

The kids liked visiting the animals.

Katie loves cows.

We took a wagon tractor ride to pick our own pumpkins.

Yummy cider and cake for sale in the farm shop!

You can also visit their English and German website. They’re about 10 minutes away from Landstuhl.

There’s a milk and egg dispensary.

We took a field trip to Appel Happel to pick apples!

We learned about apples.

There was a short presentation about apples and how they grow on the trees and the parts inside.

We got to compare the different varieties.

We got watch and try an old-fashioned apple press and taste the juice.

It was really crowded. We’re patiently waiting our turn.

We got to see all the apples inside the coolers.

The rows had handwritten signs to show the different apple varieties.

It was fun exploring the different apples.

Tori checks the apples for bruises or holes.

Alex looks for the best apple.

Wheelbarrows are fun and quicker to get to the end of the rows.

Here’s a crate of apples we collected.

Time for treats after all that hard work! Cakes, muffins, and unfiltered apple juice.

There are 15 different kinds of apples to pick from August to October!

Apple varieties: Delba, Santana, Elstar, Gala, Cox Orangen, Rubinette, Berlepsch, Boskoop, Pinova, Topas, Jonagold, Wellant, Fuji, Braeburn, Birnen, Zwetschen

You get wheelbarrows to pick apples. The apples are then weighed and you pay. It’s best to bring your own bags or crate to carry them home.

The shop sells other great produce and products like fresh baked goods and apple drinks.

Check which apple and pear varieties are ripe during which months.

There’s an apple fest one weekend in September.

Open Door Day offers kids’ activities in October.

Appel Happel is about an hour from Ramstein and 1.5 hours from Spangdahlem.

I wanted to take advantage of the last warm day of the remnants of summer. We visited Wheeler Farm.

Alex begged to feed ducks from the moment he woke up. He was like a broken record. He knew something was up.

He was so upset when we drove by “the duck pond.” (Doesn’t every town have one of those?)

I assured him he would feed the ducks, but he wasn’t accepting that because, apparently, there’s only one duck pond in the whole world.

He was finally happy when he saw the ducks and geese. Really, he was happy.

Wheeler Farm has trails you can walk or bike. They also have tractor-pulled wagon rides. Along the trails are old farm equipment, perfect for picture posing.

Alex thought this old wagon combine was the greatest thing ever.

They have this ginormous box elder tree and the kids played in it for about half an hour. It was awesome.

Tori loved it and wants a big tree of her own.

Kate enjoyed exploring all the little nooks in the big tree.

The farm has all the typical animals you should find on a farm. Horses, pigs, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, cows (even 2 Highland cows!), sheep, and goats.

Alex adored this particular goat and didn’t want to leave her.

And, we got to milk a cow! Isn’t she lovely?

We got to see the calf get fed a bottle.

Tori was the first milker. Out of the whole barn. She was so proud.

I thought Kate would be more excited since she’s obsessed with cows. I think she likes the idea more than the real deal.

I milked her too.
Alex wouldn’t even walk up with me.

It was a fun day. And it was free admission! (milking costs $1 per person)

We had a blast on our Black Island Farms pumpkin patch field trip.

Daddy even took off work to experience the fun with us (and help me wrangle the young uns!) This farm does agro-tourism to help stay afloat in this economy. We learned about their irrigation system and saw a harrow plow in action.

Alex really was fascinated by the tractor during the wagon ride. So glad we got a seat up front!

The kids got to see, feel, and test out the carrots and cabbage that they grow. Gimme some coleslaw!

(Did you know that those baby carrots are actually carrot pellets? They’re not quite so thrilling now…)

Everyone got to pick out a pie pumpkin (even I did!) and we’re going to try our hand at making homemade pumpkin pie and some other delectable pumpkin-y recipes this week.

Of course, we couldn’t resist the cheesy scarecrow picture!

We got feed animals too! Katie loved the baby cows, but they were sleepy. Pigs, goats, turkeys, and chickens were in their zoo too. This llama was super friendly and hungry.

Katie and Alex got to ride the tractor train! I was so proud of Katie holding tight her little brother! He didn’t want to get off, but they were closing the ride for the day!
