Homemade Face Serum

November 12, 2014 By Jennifer Lambert 6 Comments

I LOVE using essential oils in my beauty routine.

I don’t like all the chemicals in commercial beauty products.

My teen daughters and I typically use coconut oil and some essential oils after morning cleansing.

When we want something with a little more moisture and nourishment, we add several essential oils to a blend of nourishing carrier oils.

Beauty Face Oil

Here’s the recipe for my favorite face oil:

  • 1 oz. Sweet Almond Oil (Hydrates, brightens, reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Use another carrier oil if you’re allergic to tree nuts!)
  • 3 Tsp. Vitamin E Oil (Nourishes. Antioxidant that protects and repairs your skin.)
  • 3 Tsp. Castor Oil (Moisturizes and stimulates lash growth. Reduces puffiness and helps eliminate wrinkles and scars.)
  • 5-7 drops Frankincense essential oil
  • 3 drops Lemon essential oil
  • 3-5 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 1 Evening Primrose Oil capsule (Hydrates the skin and increases circulation. Also reduces inflammation and clears pores.)

Mix the carrier oils together in a dark glass bottle (I typically use a dropper bottle). Puncture the Evening Primrose Oil capsule and squirt it in. Add essential oils. Attach dropper lid and mix gently.

Apply every night all over face (especially the sensitive and thin eyelids!), neck, and décolleté before going to bed.

It smells heavenly and nourishes the skin.

Here is another option that can suit your skin’s needs:

Nourish from Within Sacred Body Oil

  • 1 oz (30 ml) vanilla-infused jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)
  • 6 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
  • 4 drops Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
  • 3 drops Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens)
  • 2 drops Rose (Rosa × damascena)

Experiment. Have fun. Smell great! Have gorgeous skin.

(Be aware of any nut or other allergies when you choose carrier oils.)

Pick a Carrier Oil:

  • Carrier oils for Normal skin: Almond, Hazelnut, Apricot kernel, Jojoba, Evening Primrose
  • Carrier oils for Dry skin: Almond, Olive oil, Apricot kernel, Soy bean, Avocado, Wheatgerm, Jojoba, Carrot, Evening Primrose
  • Carrier oils for Oily skin: Almond, Hazelnut, Apricot kernel, Grapeseed, Jojoba
  • Carrier oil for Mature skin: Almond, Hazelnut, Apricot kernel, Wheatgerm, Evening Primrose, Carrot, Rosehip, Pomegranate, Borage

Pick the Best Essential Oils for Your Skin Type and the Scents You Love:

  • Essential oils for Normal skin: German Chamomile, Lemon, Geranium, Fennel, Lavender, Jasmine, Rose, Neroli, Frankincense, Carrot Seed
  • Essential oils for Dry skin: German Chamomile, Lavender, Calendula, Sandalwood, Geranium, Patchouli, Rose, Rosemary, Neroli
  • Essential oils for Oily skin: Cedarwood, Geranium, Clary Sage, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Lemon, Peppermint, Frankincense, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Juniper, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Neroli
  • Essential oils for Mature skin: Rose, Geranium, Myrrh, Patchouli, Lavender, Citrus, Frankincense, Neroli, Fennel, Clary Sage, Sage, Cypress, Sandalwood

I see an improvement in my skin texture and clarity, especially as winter approaches with its cold air, drying wind, and indoor central heating.

What are your favorite scents?

10 DIY Gifts with Essential Oils

This blog may contain affiliate links: disclosure.
Please see my suggested resources.

November 12, 2014 By Jennifer Lambert 6 Comments

Want some DIY gift ideas using natural ingredients and essential oils?

Someone into natural health and beauty would love these items!

Check out these 10 DIY gifts with essential oils:

1. Simple Homemade Cleaner.

As simple as baking soda and essential oils in a pretty jar. I like the oily combination of Thieves, Peppermint, and Citrus. Perfect for cleaning the bathroom and scrubbing your nose. Super safe and smells great! For really good cleaning, add some vinegar.

2. Scented Play Dough.

Add essential oils (or even dry spice blends like Apple or Pumpkin!), glitter, and natural food coloring for pretty fun!

Simple play dough recipe: Mix in warm nonstick pan.

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 Tablespoon cream of tartar

Add essential oils, glitter, and natural food coloring and knead until desired consistency. Store in pretty jar with a ribbon. I like Cinnamon, Lavender, Citrus, or Peppermint. I’ve also added Magnesium oil for calming.

3. Beauty Serum.

Great for all skin types and smells amazing. Check out the recipe here. What lady wouldn’t love to find this in her stocking? Great way to get teens into a good skin care routine. Another super easy skin recipe is whipped coconut oil with Lavender.

Beauty Face Oil

4. Bath Soothers.

Add about 10-15 drops of any of these essential oils: Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Rosemary, Lavender, Clove, Cinnamon, Peppermint (decide what scents you love) to a baking soda paste (about 1-2 cups of baking soda with about 1/2 c water until it’s pasty like putty). Place in a pretty silicone muffin tray to dry for about 30 minutes. Pop out and store in a pretty bag with a ribbon. (Beware use with children. These are “hot” oils and could irritate lungs.)

5. Roll-on Blends.

Add essential oils to a carrier oil like Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Almond Oil, fractionated Coconut Oil, or V-6 for personalized blends in pretty and easy roll-on bottles. Some of my favorite oils and blends are Cedarwood and Lavender, Frankincense and Lemon, Thieves, Valor, Pine and Orange.

6. Scented Bath Salts.

Super simple!

1 c Epsom Salt, 1/2 c baking soda, 10 drops of a soothing essential oil like Lavender.

Mix and place in a pretty jar! Add a sprig of dried lavender or crushed rose petals and a little scoop to the ribbon for a pretty and useful present.

7. Scented Salt Dough Ornaments.

Pretty and fun for the whole family. Great for an ornament exchange party!

Recipe for salt dough ornaments:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water

Add essential oils and natural food coloring to dough. Cut out in pretty shapes. Acrylic paints and glitter (optional). Bake at 225 F for 3-6 hours. Seal with lacquer (optional) but they will last longer and be shiny. Not sure if they will smell as great though. Add a hanging ribbon.

8. Pretty Soap.

You can get a goat’s milk soap base and melt it down. Add essential oils and oatmeal or dried herbs for extra oomph. Place in a pretty soap mold or silicone muffin tin to harden. Pop out and wrap up in pretty paper! See this soap recipe my kids use!

9. Sugar Scrub.

A great pampering gift for anyone! Makes skin smooth and smell great!

Recipe:

Melt coconut oil in a double boiler (I often just use a glass jar). Stir in white or brown sugar until desired consistency. Add essential oil and 1 drop of natural food coloring, if desired.

  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 1½ – 2 cups white sugar
  • 5-10 drops Peppermint oil

10. Lip Balm.

Pamper those lips!

Recipe: Melt wax, honey, butter, and oil together in a glass jar or double boiler. Remove from heat and add essential oils. While still liquid, pour into a lip balm containers and cool until hardened. You can also use old mint tins or little balm jars.

  • 1/4 Cup Beeswax
  • 2 Teaspoons Honey
  • 1/4 Cup Coconut Oil
  • 1/4 Cup shea or cocoa butter
  • 10 drops of essential oil (whatever you like – Peppermint, Lavender, Citrus)

These fun and easy DIY items are great for a “make and take” party too!

October 14, 2014 By Jennifer Lambert 6 Comments

I used to love potpourri, air fresheners, scented waxes, and candles.

But those are all full of synthetic scents.

They gave my husband a headache.

Fire and hot wax are dangerous around little kids (and pets).

So thankful I have essential oils to diffuse safe scents instead of candles or wax.

20 Aromatherapy Diffuser Blends

Twenty of our favorite diffuser essential oil blends:

  1. Rosemary, Lavender, Lime (this is probably my favorite, everyday scent!)
  2. Orange, Patchouli, Ginger or Clove
  3. Rosemary, Orange, Lavender
  4. Lavender, Sandalwood, and any evergreen scent (Cedar, Spruce, Fir, Pine, Juniper, etc.)
  5. Orange, Cinnamon, and Spruce (Add Ginger, Clove, Cardamom, or Nutmeg for yummy baking scents!)
  6. Orange, Tangerine, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Spearmint (Add Cinnamon or Ginger for zing!)
  7. Orange, Cinnamon, Ginger
  8. Copaiba, Lime, Cedarwood, Vanilla, Ocotea, Lavender (Add citrus or a floral for extra freshness)
  9. Frankincense, Cinnamon, Spruce
  10. Lavender, Lemon, Spearmint
  11. Orange, Lavender, Frankincense
  12. Sandalwood and Neroli
  13. Juniper, Orange, Cinnamon
  14. Clary Sage, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang
  15. Lavender and Roman Chamomile
  16. Lemon, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang
  17. Basil, Bergamot, Cinnamon, Lemon (add Melissa for extra oomph)
  18. Lavender, Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang, Marjoram
  19. Frankincense, Cypress, Vetiver, and evergreen of your choice (Cedar, Spruce, Fir, Pine, Juniper, etc.)
  20. Cypress, Fir or Spruce, and Wintergreen (great manly scent!)

Always beware diffusing peppermint or eucalyptus around children or elderly – their sensitive mucous membranes could get irritated!

Traveling with Essential Oils

April 28, 2014 By Jennifer Lambert Leave a Comment

Many of you know we’re moving to Germany next month. (If this is news to you, then you really need to follow me on social media!)

My husband is a lab officer in the Air Force and we’ll be stationed in Germany for about three years.

We packed out our entire house last week and are now living on base in a three-bedroom apartment – with a single bathroom (that has only a shower and no A/C) for a dozen or so days before we head out on a road trip across America!

We couldn’t narrow down which essential oils we wanted to bring, so we brought ’em all!

The movers won’t pack opened liquids anyway.

Our unopened stock was packed well in a little cosmetic suitcase and then in a big box.

Traveling with essential oils is interesting.

Traveling with Essential Oils

Most people don’t know what they are. Some ask questions. We usually tell TSA it’s medicine and we’ve never had a second glance.

Traveling internationally is different.

Most security checks require 1 QUART-SIZE BAG per person.

We have a small red case that fits about 16 essential oil bottles and fits inside a quart bag. We all manage with 5 baggies for other items when traveling.

When we PCSed, I bought a cool teal case and a big purple case from AbundantHealth4U. We had no problem traveling with these as carry ons from Atlanta to Baltimore to Ramstein.

Travel diffusers are a must! I have a travel diffuser and I love these new USB travel diffusers!

We make sure we have our supplements.

PCS time is a stressful few weeks, so I added a cortisol supplement to my daily regimen of cod liver oil, 2 capsules of evening primrose oil, and some hormone helps.

The little kids take a liquid kids multivitamin and cod liver oil.

The teen takes a teen multivitamin, cod liver oil, and 1 capsule of evening primrose oil.

Aaron takes several supplements daily.

I put all these in our checked luggage for a PCS.

When we take a vacation, I use individual pill cases.

I pack my makeup and skin care products in my personal cosmetic case when we PCS.

When we PCS, I check the items that are larger than the required 3 oz, wrapping carefully and placing in big zippy bags.

For short trips, I use refillable travel bottles for personal care items for the kids and me. And we maneuver them all into 5 quart baggies.

My face looks and feels so much smoother and has more even tone since I started using natural skin care products.

These are our daily must-haves and there is no way I’d throw this stuff out.

Do you have any tips for traveling with essential oils?

Homemade Sunscreen

This blog may contain affiliate links: disclosure.
Please see my suggested resources.

March 31, 2014 By Jennifer Lambert 13 Comments

It’s ironic to make sunscreen when it’s snowing outside. The end of March and we get snow all day long! I am getting depressed with winter.

I long for sunny days and warmer temperatures and the need for sunscreen! I’m preparing and wishfully thinking.

I love the scent and texture of this natural homemade sunscreen.

It works great, smells great, moisturizes, doesn’t break our skin out, and doesn’t have any of those nasty unpronouncable ingredients.

It’s pretty water-resistant too.

Water Resistant Sunscreen Recipe:

  • 1/2 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Oil (natural SPF of 10+)
  • 1/4 cup Beeswax (try to get some locally for even more health benefits!) This makes it water-resistant.
  • 2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide powder (natural SPF of 20+)
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil (I love the scent of this stuff!)
  • 2 Tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF of 5+)
  • 40-50 drops of Essential Oils (I use about 10 drops each of Lavender, Helichrysum, Myrrh, Roman Chamomile, Carrot Seed)

Melt the oils (except vitamin E and essential oils) over medium heat in a double boiler or in a glass jar and fill the pot halfway up the side of your jar with water. Stir with a wooden spoon. I sometimes just use a disposable plastic spoon or even wooden chopstick! I typically don’t use metal spoons when dealing with essential oils in case they react.

Let the oil mixture cool to almost room temperature, but not yet solidified, then add the vitamin E oil, zinc oxide, and essential oils. After an hour or so, it will solidify to a nice creamy lotion. If you keep it really chilled, you could put this into pretty shaped molds and have a lotion bar.

I found this glass jar in the container section of Walmart. Craft stores have a nice selection too. I love pretty glass jars with good sealable lids!

This homemade natural sunscreen has at least 30 SPF with the essential oils and all those natural ingredients! It smells amazing and is good for your skin – with no scary chemicals.  I have so many friends and family members who are allergic to commercial sunscreens and they have to be really careful when they go out on sunny days. With this, they won’t have to worry so much! And it smells great and doesn’t leave our skin greasy.

We do have to reapply this a bit more often than commercial sunscreens if we’re spending the whole day at a pool or beach.

TAN ENHANCER: You need the sun’s exposure, but not to the point of burning. Try this simple recipe to nourish your skin with healthy oils, while resisting some of the harmful UV rays. As always, use care and common sense with the amount of time your skin is exposed to the sun. RECIPE: Mix 6 T coconut oil with 1 T sesame oil. Rub into the skin. According to Sue Frederick, author of A Mother’s Guide to Raising Healthy Children, sesame oil resists 30% of UV rays while coconut oil blocks out about 20%. Info has not been evaluated by the FDA.

Want a super quick 3-ingredient sunscreen?

  • 4-5 oz Your favorite natural lotion
  • 1-2 T Zinc Oxide
  • 12-15 drops Carrot Seed essential oil

Homemade Lotion

March 20, 2014 By Jennifer Lambert Leave a Comment

My initial introduction to essential oils was to help my eldest daughter with her dry skin. It was suggested I help her from the inside out, so we changed our diet. I bought a healthy digestion oil blend and saw instant results.

There are many additives in skin care products and soaps that often exacerbate dry skin conditions. Check your labels!

After trial and error, we had to eliminate many products and get natural personal care products instead.

My natural hand balm can help dry skin.

Dry Skin Remedies | https://www.jenniferalambert.com/

Essential Oils we’ve tried to help with dry skin: Cypress, Copaiba, Frankincense, Lavender, Myrrh, Roman Chamomile, Rose, Geranium

Melaleuca oil blend mixed with coconut oil was our best result for this time and place for our daughter.

Of course, I don’t recommend using all of these oils and products at once! Just start with one or a few and see what helps or smells great to you.

We recently made some hand balm with essential oils.

I made Tori a big jar of melaleuca hand balm since her hands are like sandpaper in our dry Utah winters. She feels special with her own jar of hand cream.

Recipe:

Melt in a mason jar in a pot of jar or double boiler:

  • 1/2 c coconut oil
  • 1/4 c shea butter
  • 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa butter

Then mix in some vitamin E and essential oils before it goes back to a solid. I like my stand mixer to whip it good.

I used melaleuca, frankincense, and lavender but there are many essential oils with benefits for our skin!

You can also whip the melted carrier oils in a stand mixer for a fluffy texture. As they cool down, the lotion will retain the air and feel silky.

Eat your way to healthy skin!

We eat nourishing, healthy proteins and fats like gelatin, collagen, liver, and cod liver oil. I take a supplement for specifically for healthy skin.

We’ve tried limiting wheat and dairy because we’ve learned it can have negative effects on skin, but my husband and Tori don’t have skin issues with it. If they overdo it, their moods are affected.

Back to School with Essential Oils

This blog may contain affiliate links: disclosure.
Please see my suggested resources.

August 5, 2013 By Jennifer Lambert Leave a Comment

School can be a stressful or anxious time for students of all ages.

Aromatherapy is a powerful tool that students can use at school and when they study.

Back to School with Essential Oils | https://www.jenniferalambert.com/

Whatever your child’s school situation, be prepared with essential oils!

We are blessed to homeschool, and I can use oils in our home all day long! I diffuse essential oils and massage diluted topical oils as needed to myself and my children throughout our day. We manage our mood and health with essential oils. And we like citrus blends to diffuse away kitchen or science experiment smells!

When I attended an oil convention, one of the presenters mentioned that some school nurses allow and can dispense essential oils just like prescription meds. If children go to the office to take OTC or prescription meds during the day, then your child should be able go to the office periodically for aromatherapy purposes. Get notes from your natural health provider or physician. Talk to your school administrators!

Oiling kids up before bed is a great wind-down routine. We include it with prayers and storytime.

On a side note, have your family members tested for vitamin B and D deficiency to ensure optimal brain health. Often deficiencies in these important vitamins mimic depression and anxiety symptoms.

Read articles about vitamin D deficiency.

And read this article: The ADHD Scam and the Mass Drugging of Schoolchildren

Diffusers and aromatherapy jewelry make great teacher gifts!

There are multiple ways to use Essential Oils in a school environment.

Here are some of our oily methods we use with our children.

Staying Calm

Whether it’s test time or just a busy, crowded schedule, kids often experience more anxiety and stress than we did while attending school. Be prepared to help your children with a healthy natural diet, prayer, boundaries, gentle guidance, plenty of sleep, and essential oils. Lavender is great to promote restful sleep, calmness, and even healthy skin.

Staying Healthy

Many of my friends whose children attend school worry so much those first few weeks when they’re exposed to all sorts of illnesses.

Boost those immune systems and shorten the lifespan of those viruses and bacteria!

We like oregano, lemongrass, and Thieves blend.

Maintaining Energy and Attention

We all get run-down and worn out. Some of us are affected more easily than others. Help your kids be at their best with a healthy whole foods diet, nutritional supplements, clean water, and essential oils!

Many essential oils can help with focus, attention, and brain balance.

Citrus oils can help relax and smell so refreshing. Orange is my son’s favorite! We have lots of favorite blends we diffuse or anoint.

Some studies suggest essential oils can help fidgety children combined with an improved natural diet. When we changed our diet, we noticed significant positive changes in behavior and attention. We also take cod liver oil daily.

Jewelry

There are lots of aromatherapy accessories and jewelry like bracelets and necklaces that can help kids while being stylish and unique.

  • Essential Oil Diffuser 3 Slap Bracelet Sport Set
  • Aromatherapy Diffuser Bracelet, Braided Leather
  • Aromatherapy Diffuser Necklace Locket

Essential Oils for Growing Pains

This blog may contain affiliate links: disclosure.
Please see my suggested resources.

April 26, 2013 By Jennifer Lambert 25 Comments

My tween daughter had some growing pains lately. It became very uncomfortable.

Her mobility was poor and it resulted in very tight tendons and muscles.

eldest daughter

Here’s my eldest daughter 10 months ago. She’s 12.5 years old.

I’ve been using essential oils on her since January.

We first became concerned about her a year or so ago. She walked on her toes and said her feet and legs hurt. She was unable to place her heels on the floor.

I got her new shoes, in the correct size. She hadn’t told me for several months that her boots were too small. She loved those boots that much. I felt like a bad mom.

It didn’t completely help the problem.

So, we took her to the doctor. And another. And then a specialist.

Some doctors said she needed surgery on her legs.

Her tendons were too tight. She had hammer toes. Her spinal column was too short. Her ankles were weak. She needed pins in her ankles to straighten and strengthen.

They all said different, scary things, but they all wanted surgery.

What we did instead of surgery:

We bought her yet another pair of shoes – expensive, super stiff-soled walking shoes with rigid ankle brace inserts.

We did yoga. Pi-yo. The whole family encouraged, helped, participated. All the other kids wanted to do stretches too. It was great.

She wasn’t very successful at running track last season because she was almost in tears after practices and therefore didn’t do well in the races. She was in constant pain.

So we went the physical therapy route for a while, last spring and summer. It helped some. They ended our sessions with the comment that she wasn’t progressing because she feared pain, even though she wasn’t experiencing it any more. They had done all they could for her.

It seemed strange that she could run barefoot through the yard just fine.

I think she was improving, but when she thought about it, that fear of pain came back. When she didn’t think, she walked and ran fine.

We let it drop for a while since she wasn’t complaining of pain.

Absence of pain isn’t always the best answer.

Then, I noticed that she seemed to be getting worse again, instead of better. She still walked up on her tippy toes and cried that it hurt to place her feet flat on the floor.

I still remind her nightly to do her stretches, assigned to her by the PT. We do yoga most mornings and more stretches. I encouraged her to walk barefoot in the house and yard, reminding her that it’s heel to toe, and even to stomp, if it helps.

A real miracle at work has been the essential oils. I massage her legs and spine with the oils. We begin and end with a wonderful essential oil blend (it’s been called “chiropractor in a bottle”). It’s supposed to help her body naturally realign the spine and nerves. Basil, Wintergreen, Cypress, Marjoram, Oregano, Peppermint, Thyme, and a few other oils and blends are helping manage her leg pain.

And I pray over her.

Every night. Every morning. Multiple times per day. For physical as well as spiritual and mental healing.

When it became possible in our budget, my husband took her to his chiropractor. He also uses essential oils in his practice and is very into natural methods.

The chiropractor “turned on” all her core muscles. They were all nonfunctioning! That certainly was much of the problem. Only five sessions were needed to get everything working properly. He affirmed that she should continue to do the stretches prescribed by her PT. Now I know she’s really on the road to recovery.

And she is now in Civil Air Patrol – with all the marching and standing at attention, it’s all coming together and her posture is much improved. She passed both her physical training tests last month, running 1.5 miles well under the necessary time, along with many sit ups and push ups.

No pain. The combat boots help her stand straight with her heels down. And the good peer pressure to conform to the squadron helps her to try harder to stand at attention well.

Here she is on Easter morning. Her posture is so much better than it was!

Essential oils for growing pains

I am so thankful that surgery wasn’t necessary.

I just felt in my heart that we should look to alternative medicine to heal and her growing body would adjust itself with time and therapy.

We’re still praying. Still doing stretches, still monitoring and still massaging with essential oils.

Still encouraging her and thanking God that there’s been no need for surgery.

Keep Calm

December 27, 2012 By Jennifer Lambert 2 Comments

I’ve had many friends and acquaintances ask me recently about how calm my children are.

Is that a good thing?

Calm is not the point. Connected to self during any and every experience is the point. Can a child learn to be with themselves when they are anxious, happy, angry sad…? That’s the point. That’s emotional intelligence.

I know that my kids do get rambunctious, but they always seem to be calm and collected when it really counts. When other kids are ricocheting off the walls and their parents are embarrassedly hushing them and stage whispering threats, I am usually inwardly smiling at my kids’ stellar behavior.

See my Pinterest board on parenting. I am constantly learning. I am certainly no expert!

Whereas I find my friends’ compliments a great affirmation, I can’t take all the credit here.

I think most of us have intelligent, active kids. Society often teaches that we have to stifle their natural exuberance or break their wills.

I strive to have a great relationship with my children. They trust me. They know I want what’s best for them. I seek their opinion and strive to satisfy their needs and desires.

We’ve run the gamut with making sure our kids are healthy and productive.

Elizabeth was “off the charts” for ADHD when she was about 5-7. We went the medication route for about a year. She stopped eating. She is super skinny anyway, so that didn’t work for me at all. I looked into more natural ways to manage her moods and focus abilities. We changed our diet and started eating more naturally. If it has lots of unpronounceable ingredients, we rarely eat it.

Now, we do have healthier treats (without a lot of sugar and additives and dye!) but we occasionally eat things we shouldn’t. We use Annie’s mac and cheese rather than Kraft. We eat lots of fruits and vegetables. We buy the best meat, dairy, and eggs that we can afford. I limit the prepared snack items we keep on hand.

I rely on essential oils and dietary supplements for brain health.

Then, in my research, I discovered cod liver oil. I cannot praise its properties enough! The kids are calmer, more focused and attentive, complete their school work quicker than before. Some of this is that they are maturing and growing up these last few months, but I know the cod liver oil helps. Our kids love the Cinnamon Tingle flavor. I take the orange capsules. There’s no flavor, no aftertaste, and no reflux or burps.

We’ve taken this liquid multivitamin for years. I highly recommend a multivitamin since our diets are just never good enough. The kids have so much more energy when they take this daily. It’s worth the expense.

I also take Evening Primrose oil capsules and a multi-B complex in addition to cod liver oil every day. I try to take a multivitamin too, but I find if I remember to take my oils and B, I’m energetic enough.

Also? Our skin looks radiant.

We go outside lots for fresh air and sunshine. I think it helps the kids to be active and loud and act like children in the freedom of our back yard or the park. Daily walks help me too.

These essential oils are the ones we use daily.

Thieves oil maintains our immune systems. We rub it on our feet before bed. We rarely get infections now!  When Tori recently got a cold, it was much less than previous years.

Lavender works wonders on the little cuts and scrapes and skin abrasions so common in kids. Alex and Tori have dry, sensitive skin and break out around their mouths periodically, but after a couple days of lavender oil, it’s all gone. Tori knows to dab it on herself when she starts breaking out. We also limit her milk intake.

Frankincense helps brain development and heightens spiritual awareness. There’s a reason it was a gift to Jesus and it is a precious substance. I put it on my face Sunday mornings before church. Tori loves the scent and often asks me to massage her face with it. It helps moisturize skin better than commercial products!

I use several happy oil blends like perfume every day to help me conquer negativity and moodiness. I have suffered from low grade depression since I was about 12. I can’t tell you how much better I feel since using these oils. I sometimes put oil blends on Tori to help her if she’s going to be experiencing a tough situation, like our church Christmas pageant. She’s painfully shy and it gives her strength to get through it.

I use a peaceful blend often on Kate to keep her from bouncing off the walls. I often use it in my bath water after a tough week (before you think: “Ew”…I shower daily, but I only get to lay in a bath weekly, if I’m lucky!).

Liz has come such a long way from when we were at our wits’ end with her lack of focus and hyperactivity. She is learning how to manage on her own and recognize her mood triggers and find memory helps to learn better. She is learning that when her blood sugar plummets, she needs to eat. Her attitude is affected.

Tori isn’t quite so much the space cadet with her supplements and oils. We’re learning what works best as she grows and matures.

Of course, prayer and mindfulness are also extremely important.

The things we do work well for our family. I don’t know what issues you may have with moods, behaviors, allergies, etc. I am not a doctor. I’m just a mom. These are just our experiences.

The kids often watch me and take my lead. If I stay calm and teach peace, they learn this and will practice it.

Calm is not the same as regulated.
