I had a great opportunity to review Diagnose Yourself: Place the Power of Healing in Your Hands by Reid Jenner.
How many of us have visited a doctor only to leave, frustrated, with a fistful of prescriptions that don’t even help the problem?
Most doctors are not trained to ask patients any questions. They use their tools to assess condition and their knowledge to diagnose. All in about a 10 minute consultation.
Most medical institutions prefer short patient visits, more invasive procedures, and a higher prevalence of tests – which contribute to more misdiagnoses, longer wait times, and increase in costs.
Couple this with the extraordinary profits of drug company patents with 20-year non-competition license to sell meds. Drug companies pay incentives to doctors to enroll patients in clinical drug trials.
The United States and New Zealand are the only two countries in the world that allow direct-to-customer advertising for drugs.
There are few checks and balances to this system.
A remarkable concept:
We can diagnose yourself within 60-120 minutes simply by asking the right questions and using your own knowledge.
Ten chapters explain the problems with most medical institutions and how patients can diagnose themselves to get the treatment they need and deserve. Charts, questionnaires, and worksheets.
This often ineffective method of treating symptoms based on commonly categorized disease prototypes is perhaps most blatantly observed in the field of psychiatry. If a mother brings in a hyperactive child to the doctor’s office, very often the child is quickly labeled as having ADHD, and mood- altering psychotropic drugs are prescribed by the attending physician. Or if the child is abnormally withdrawn, he might be labeled as having Asperger’s Syndrome, and a different type of medication is prescribed. An unusually careful or focused child might be labeled as having OCD— and so it goes. In each instance, the condition is often referred to as a ‘disease’, and the prognosis is an indefinite, often lifetime, regimen of side- effect- inducing psychotropic drugs. Very little time or effort is taken to truly understand why the child may be behaving in this manner, nor to allow the child to tell the doctor his full story.
Fewer than 25% of illnesses are caused by genetic influences. Which means 75% are caused by environmental influences.
Reid Jenner walks the reader through steps to learn how we are influenced by factors in our environment to diagnose ourselves.
He cites case studies and describes how the checklists and body outline profiles can be used for self-diagnosis.
The final chapter is all about natural health options and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
I highly recommend this book to educate yourself about how the environment affects our bodies and when it becomes imbalanced, how we can diagnose ourselves to best communicate with doctors well.
