New Calendar Board

January 31, 2012 By Jennifer Lambert Leave a Comment

Our calendar board is a work in progress.

I am forever looking for improvements and changing it to suit our needs.

One side is our monthly themed calendar:

The other side is our circle time morning board.

After this picture was taken, I added a liturgical calendar wheel to help us understand the church calendar.

Our Calendar Board

On the left, I have our pledges to the American flag, Christian flag, and Bible.

In the middle is our Bible verse of the week.

On the left is our theme poem of the month.

We have our themes of the week on the green page: letter, character trait, state, animal, shape, color.

We have a clock, temp, and money chart.

We pray using the acronym ACTS:

Adoration,

Confession,

Thanksgiving, and

Supplication.

Calendar Notebooks

Tori and Katie have calendar notebooks that they do almost daily to help them understand the calendar and themes and whatever else I throw in there that makes sense to us that week or month.

The kids love to learn during our morning circle time. We get so much accomplished – Bible, shapes, colors, animals, money, time, temperature, months and days of the week. I love how much they learn in just a few minutes each morning.

Winter math and science this week with Frozen Bubbles and Penguins

Feeding the penguin…combination of the game Memory and addition/subtraction.

Pick two cards and work out the math equation and then feed the penguin that many fish cards. They loved it.

It’s been really cold. Why not blow bubbles outside and see what they do? They freeze and shatter!

We also estimated how many snowballs to make a snowman. We found a great template here.

We played a really fun math game called Melt the Snowman. Katie won, but Tori was a good sport. We’ll play it again soon.

Here is what we do on Tuesday afternoons while Elizabeth is at her piano and voice lessons (if the weather permits).

At the Playground!

Alex had a fit if his sisters didn’t rush over to hold hands and slide with him.

He learned how to swing from the top bar. I about had a heart attack. Thanks, Tori, for teaching Alex that trick!

I set up a class at our winter homeschool co-op using the story+art ideas from A Mommy’s Adventures.

story+art=StArt

I have a theme each week and check out books from the library and bring art supplies for a craft. There are about a dozen kids signed up, grades K-2, including my Tori and Katie (for whom I planned the class).

Last week, we read some ABC books and did initial collages.

I had all sorts of collage materials, hoping to appeal to all the boys and girls: moss, rocks, sequins, shells, beads, jewels, stickers…

We all got a kick out of this alphabet book: A is for Salad. The pictures illustrate the letter, but the words say something a little different.

Victoria’s and Katherine’s initial collages:

I did one with Alex at home. He was so proud!

I couldn’t get the ‘A’ to print straight. Oh well, he didn’t mind.

This week, we read about dots and did Do-A-Dot pages.

Those were a real hit!

I got the dot printables from Making Learning Fun. We used the theme of Swimming Creatures to go along with our Apologia Science class.

We broke out our new continent box of Antarctica Friday.

I have a sensory continent card, penguin life cycle chart, penguin 3-part cards, animals of Antarctica, and a Penguin Toob. The kiddos LOVED it! We have lots of winter, snow, and Antarctica books on our display shelf right now.

The girls are proud of their new box and all the goodies! They spread it all out on our new mats (from Walmart), Montessori-style!

We matched penguins to the cards and learned about the different kinds.

Penguin Card Matching

We made a rubbing (sort of) out of the sensory card.

Then, Tori and I explored some prepositions with a penguin printable: above, below, beside, on, left, right, etc.

Preposition Work

I found this great penguin FFG that I recommissioned as a Build a Sight Word game.

I wrote cold words on the penguin signs and Tori matched up the letters on the other penguins. She loved it.

Penguin File Folder Game

We played a fun penguin feeding game.

Antarctica is a pretty cool place and we love penguins!

Our new cube system with some Montessori trays. Alex’s is on the left. My K girls’ is on the right, but they often share. Alex sure is different from the girls at 21 months! He is so active; he doesn’t want to sit still for long and has no interest in paper activities.
Toddler Montessori Shelves

A favorite activity is in the bottom far left cube: pouring black beans into a bowl. He also liked picking up pony beads and “feeding” the duck  in the middle bottom cube.
He pretty ignored all his other activities.
Here is Alex using one of the girls’ activities. I didn’t think he would be able to do it, but he sure surprised me! I named all the colors and shapes for him.
He loves the pattern blocks!
Tangrams Play
So I found our other tangram set for him to play with…
Alex was sure thrilled to pick out all the O’s (circles) from these tangrams. (Why, yes, that is a princess table…)

He asked me for a bowl to sort them into. He found all the baby O’s.

Then he started stacking O’s and squares by color!

He enjoyed stamping with our snowy stamp set.
