I used to love potpourri, air fresheners, scented waxes, and candles.

But those are all full of synthetic scents.

They gave my husband a headache.

Fire and hot wax are dangerous around little kids (and pets).

So thankful I have essential oils to diffuse safe scents instead of candles or wax.

20 Aromatherapy Diffuser Blends

Twenty of our favorite diffuser essential oil blends:

  1. Rosemary, Lavender, Lime (this is probably my favorite, everyday scent!)
  2. Orange, Patchouli, Ginger or Clove
  3. Rosemary, Orange, Lavender
  4. Lavender, Sandalwood, and any evergreen scent (Cedar, Spruce, Fir, Pine, Juniper, etc.)
  5. Orange, Cinnamon, and Spruce (Add Ginger, Clove, Cardamom, or Nutmeg for yummy baking scents!)
  6. Orange, Tangerine, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Spearmint (Add Cinnamon or Ginger for zing!)

Step Away From the Edge: Depression

I woke up to my social media feeds being inundated with people expressing their love for the iconic Robin Williams. Most were fans, but few seemed to understand that just because he was a professional comedian and actor, he was wealthy, attractive, probably had a loving family…he still was depressed and apparently committed suicide.

Bloggers immediately jumped on this viral topic to gain some pageviews off this tragic event. Parasites.

Some posted images and quotes from movies, commemorating his art. Others begged for mental illness awareness – honorable, that. Still others used this event as a platform to spew hatred and Bible verses down upon the weary.

Because that’s what Jesus wants.

He wants His Word used as a weapon against those who need Love and Truth and Understanding. Those who struggle every.single.day. to just complete menial tasks that you take for granted. Just to get through another day. To breathe. To live.

And I don’t discount The Gospel. We all need His saving grace, but we need people to speak with love and gentleness. The Christian church needs to quit spouting off that depression can just be cured with a magic wand of some joy, joy, joy down in my heart, three sessions of Christian counseling with some pompous pastor’s wife who has no life experience, and more church ministry involvement to keep our minds busier.

I haven’t showered in two days. I have an ear infection. I’m going through the motions of doing dishes and laundry and making peanut butter chocolate chip oatmeal cookie bars. I’m educating my three children really well (gasp!) this week…while I have panic attacks over Liz being away at Civil Air Patrol encampment for.seven.days. These are the longest days ever without her here.

And I remember.

It could’ve been me.

Step Away From the Edge

Because I know what I would leave behind.

A husband. Four children. Two cats. Parents. Friends, cousins, acquaintances…a dozen deadlines. They keep me here, plugging along. And I wonder those thoughts you don’t dare admit consciously. Sometimes, everything is so overwhelming. And no one understands.

Depression is not a choice. No one would choose this. No one wants to feel this way. If I had a choice, I’d be any other way but this.

Is it selfish? Maybe. But I felt cornered, alone, lost. Jesus and hope and love seemed far away. We who are trained to never be selfish feel guilt upon guilt and just want it all to stop.

Circumstances don’t matter.

Money and fame don’t mean a thing. Bible verses don’t help. Often, meds don’t help but exacerbate the problems or cause other unpleasantness. We’re surrounded by all these people who love us, but yet we still feel lost and alone. And in the midst of the darkness of depression, the desperation…I don’t hear Jesus. That’s the evil of it. The perfection of the darkness, the loss of self, the hatred of being.

I unconsciously push people away who try to get too close, even my husband and children. It’s not normal. Keeping them at arm’s length is a defense mechanism, a self-deprecating behavior, that we’re not good enough to accept love and affection.

People tell me to “snap out of it” or “pray more” or “seek joy,” as if it were that easy. People tell me to count my blessings. That just makes me feel guilty for still feeling this way. People remind me of my wonderful family and all the places I get to live. Of course, I realize all that, but locale doesn’t make a difference. For all the 1000 reasons to be thankful, if that were enough, then we’d all be shiny happy people all the time.

I was depressed in Georgia.

I was depressed in Texas. (It was triple bad, having had two babies fourteen months apart.)

I was depressed in Hawaii, people. Yes, even there.

I was depressed in Utah. Why doesn’t spring come until July?

I was depressed in Germany. Despite my happy lamp and all the fun travelling.

I manage it. I eat well and use essential oils and supplements.

But it’s always just at bay, waiting to rage down upon me, ravaging everything in its path.

I make sure my vitamin D levels are up. I make sure I get outside in the fresh air and sunshine. I exercise (sometimes), eat right, and drink water. I try not to take too much caffeine or alcohol because I know that can trigger a downward spiral.

I do all the “right” things…and it’s still there. A thorn in my flesh. A dark cloud hanging over my head. The slug who eats all my flower buds.

Pray for us, friends. Be compassionate. Pray for the Williams family. Pray for all the families who have lost loved ones to mental illness and its issues. Pray for all those suffering in silence because of the fear of admitting to the pain. Quit judging and pointing fingers and offering unsolicited advice. Sometimes medicine is the answer.

Don’t say you understand if you don’t. Don’t offer pompous advice if you have no clue what it’s like. Having a friend or loved one who is depressed is not knowing what it’s like.

You can see, but you don’t really understand unless you’ve been on the precipice.

Step away from the edge.

Keep pluggin’ on. Get help if you need it. Please. Don’t give up.

I love having conversations with friends about God because it helps me to work out issues and learn more about myself and God.

That whole iron sharpening iron thing.

Sometimes I just need to be affirmed by other Christians.

Winds of Change

When someone says or does something and I think it’s mean, my first reaction is to withdraw, second-guess, question what I did to deserve it.

A few months ago, someone said something inappropriate and mean on my personal Facebook wall and I wallowed in self-pity for a week.

Several of my bloggy friends messaged me to tell me they are sorry for that person’s poor behavior and they are praying about it and the relationship.

Another friend replied on that thread, explaining the way it should be. It left no room for argument.

I felt loved, having so many friends rally to my aid, affirming me, and I had the victory that I didn’t lash out or retaliate (like I kinda wanted to).

I didn’t even reply, because I didn’t trust my words to be edifying. I would have just made the situation worse.

This hasn’t always been the case.

I grew up being taught to look out for number one. It’s been a long hard road to relearn Christ’s way: to turn the other cheek, pray for enemies, move on.

We love because he first loved us.

I know I have a different life, moving around with the military, living on social media and in the blogging world. Many of our friends and most of my family don’t understand or care. Some are even resentful. They don’t comprehend affiliate links or how it would help me and they choose not to pay attention to it at all. They say they feel offended when I post about homeschooling and natural health.

That’s just their own guilty conscience because I never post an attack on anyone. I share posts and write about what matters to me and to educate others.

I respect teachers. I was a teacher before God led us to homeschool. I used to trust all doctors and medicine but now we use essential oils and alternative health with an improved diet.

Sometimes, we just have to move on from toxic relationships and let God sort out the pain and heartache.

Apparently, I have a tiny bladder.

My family teases me that I have to go all the time.

My first grade teacher told my mother I was retarded because I needed to use the restroom frequently – and got my p’s and b’s mixed up. I remember too many embarrassing days when I had accidents sitting at my desk because my teacher refused to allow me to use the in-class toilet except during her prescribed breaks.

Of course, pregnancy and childbirth causes stress to the bladder and urinary tract. It seems I haven’t fully recovered and my youngest is now four years old.

Time to research and heal so I can run, jump, laugh, and sneeze without having an embarrassing accident.

No More Incontinence

Urinary Health

Going to the gym is always an adventure. Many of my acquaintances can’t relate because they’re stronger or they don’t have kids – or maybe they only have a couple kids who were born with average weight and they just don’t have any bladder issues.

I have four kids and I can’t do jumping jacks.

My kids were BIG babies. And they kickboxed my bladder. They came out like toddlers, holding their heads up and their hands out for the car keys and demanding steak dinners.

My first was almost 8 pounds and I bounced back completely after having her because I was young at only 24. My second was almost ten pounds. A mere fourteen months later, my third came along at almost eleven pounds. She was my C-Section baby. My last baby was VBAC and he was 9 pounds, 1 ounce.

I want to be able to run, jump, do exercises, sneeze, and laugh without worry.

I’ve been taking half dropperfuls of a urinary health tincture twice a day, morning and evening. I use a great oil blend that includes spearmint, sage, geranium, myrtle, nutmeg, and German chamomile (over kidneys) and cypress essential oil (over bladder) topically every evening to try to help balance out everything and support urinary health.

It does help! I forgot to do this routine a couple nights and I had more problems on those days than when I remembered to do this regimen.

I drink lots of water. While that does mean I go more frequently (which is really, really frequently compared to most people), it does help toxins get flushed out of my system.

I try to limit caffeine and alcohol consumption because those irritate the bladder. Also citrus irritates the bladder, so I limit those fruits and juices.

I try to eat well, with lots of veggies and fiber. We had lots of catering trays of sandwiches the week the moving company was packing and moving our household goods. While it was a healthier option than greasy fast food, that was not the best week for my urinary and digestive health.

One day, I drank a Throwback (real sugar) Mountain Dew and that was a big mistake. A healthy digestion essential oil blend and rest and eating better the next day helped. Sugar and carbonation doesn’t do well with me. Soda is a bladder irritant.

I should stick to water and occasionally tea.

Strengthening the Muscles

Some of us bounce back fine from having babies. I did ok until 11 pound #3 came along.

Then, there was no more bouncing for me.

It took quite a while for me to lose weight and feel better after having my third baby by C-Section. My body was pretty drained. I was advised to take mineral supplements and adjust my diet. It was recommended we follow a Paleo-type diet – long before that was a fad! This was the beginning of our healthy journey!

I slowly got healthier and got my energy and body and life back.

Then I got pregnant again with my son.

I was healthier during that pregnancy since I was put on a no-sugar diet for gestational diabetes.

I still have about ten pounds I would like to lose. I usually feel great and have enough energy to get done what needs to get done. Supplements, regular exercise, and great diet help.

But diet alone isn’t enough to heal all the mama parts that are stretched out and loose and weak by pregnancies.

But most of the exercises at gyms and in home videos and online aren’t helpful. They could actually harm the body more.

Online exercises programs are great, like Fit2Be.

It’s a great membership with online workout videos, a Facebook group, forum, and a lovely teacher. Beth is direct, professional, and knowledgeable. The exercises are short and sweet for busy moms, but they really work with regular use. Many of the exercises can be done sitting or while you’re doing other things. There are programs for the whole family. The kids love to do yoga moves with me! There are workouts for pregnancy, strengthening that core and pelvic floor, challenges, and running. I’ve never found another workout program so comprehensive, challenging, yet gentle.

Also, the Metabolic Renewal program is useful to work out hormone issues with diet and exercises, specifically during perimenopause or menopause. It’s a one-time paid membership with diet tips and online workouts with a supportive Facebook group.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a great option I’m looking into and my doctor is referring me!

I’m still on the strengthening part. But I’m getting stronger.

Medical Intervention

Sometimes, we can’t fix ourselves all alone.

As I’ve gotten older, my muscles just aren’t maintaining tone with yoga, walking, Kegels, and online exercises.

I developed a cystocele and rectocele and I have to strengthen my pelvic floor to heal them. I must make sure I avoid bladder irritants. I stay hydrated and eat lots of fiber so I don’t get constipated.

I recently developed a 6 cm fibroid and we’re shrinking that with Mirena and keeping an eye on it.

It’s important to get regular checkups with women’s health professionals to rule out problems and to know options for hormone replacement, exercises, physical therapy, pessaries, or even surgery.

I think incontinence is more common than we think.

My mother even had surgery to repair her bladder, then a hysterectomy.

Many women occasionally confide that they have to wear pads in case of accidents. They complain they can’t play with their kids on the trampoline or run for fear of accidents.

It’s embarrassing.

It shouldn’t be.

We’re all in this mama journey together. Let’s help each other instead of hiding.

Traveling with Essential Oils

Many of you know we’re moving to Germany next month. (If this is news to you, then you really need to follow me on social media!)

My husband is a lab officer in the Air Force and we’ll be stationed in Germany for about three years.

We packed out our entire house last week and are now living on base in a three-bedroom apartment – with a single bathroom (that has only a shower and no A/C) for a dozen or so days before we head out on a road trip across America!

We couldn’t narrow down which essential oils we wanted to bring, so we brought ’em all!

The movers won’t pack opened liquids anyway.

Our unopened stock was packed well in a little cosmetic suitcase and then in a big box.

Traveling with essential oils is interesting.

Traveling with Essential Oils

Most people don’t know what they are. Some ask questions. We usually tell TSA it’s medicine and we’ve never had a second glance.

Traveling internationally is different.

Most security checks require 1 QUART-SIZE BAG per person. 

We have a small red case that fits about 16 essential oil bottles and fits inside a quart bag. We all manage with 5 baggies for other items when traveling.

When we PCSed, I bought a cool teal case and a big purple case from AbundantHealth4U. We had no problem traveling with these as carry ons from Atlanta to Baltimore to Ramstein.

Travel diffusers are a must! I have a travel diffuser and I love these new USB travel diffusers!

We make sure we have our supplements.

PCS time is a stressful few weeks, so I added a cortisol supplement to my daily regimen of cod liver oil, 2 capsules of evening primrose oil, and some hormone helps.

The little kids take a liquid kids multivitamin and cod liver oil.

The teen takes a teen multivitamin, cod liver oil, and 1 capsule of evening primrose oil.

Aaron takes several supplements daily.

I put all these in our checked luggage for a PCS.

When we take a vacation, I use individual pill cases.

I pack my makeup and skin care products in my personal cosmetic case when we PCS.

When we PCS, I check the items that are larger than the required 3 oz, wrapping carefully and placing in big zippy bags.

For short trips, I use refillable travel bottles for personal care items for the kids and me. And we maneuver them all into 5 quart baggies.

My face looks and feels so much smoother and has more even tone since I started using natural skin care products.

These are our daily must-haves and there is no way I’d throw this stuff out.

Resources for Urinary Health

Urinary health is important.

My aunt died of bladder cancer. My mom suffers from many UTIs and it worries me that she seems to be constantly on antibiotics for it.

I’ve had UTIs several times throughout my life and they are so unpleasant.

I want to practice prevention and I want quick relief when I do suffer from any UTI symptoms.

Natural Remedies for Urinary Health

My top ten list for urinary health:

1. Baking Soda

Try a spoonful in a glass of water. It neutralizes the acidity in your body and urine. Not sure if lemon oil helps the taste or not.

2. Cranberries

These tart treats have anti-bacterial properties. Make sure you drink no-added-sugar instead of cocktail. Recommended 2-4 glasses a day if you have a UTI already.

3. Blueberries

An anti-bacterial superfood. Sprinkle these on yogurt or blend with cranberries for a great juice or smoothie!

4. Pineapple

Contains bromelain. It’s thought to have anti-inflammatory effects.

5. Water

Stay hydrated! Drink more to flush out your system if you have a UTI. Also, adding salt tablets or drinking a fitness drink helps get the hydration where it needs to go.

Warm water in an old-fashioned water bottle on your lower tummy helps to ease discomfort of the UTI.

6. Vitamin C

Keeps the bladder healthy by acidifying the urine so no bacteria can grow. A great general antioxidant.

7. Cotton underwear.

Fresher and dryer. And maybe opt for skirts or looser pants and leave the skinny jeans in the closet.

8. Stay clean.

Make sure you go after bathing or sex to ensure bacteria doesn’t stick around down there. Always wipe from front to back to make sure there’s no cross-contamination.

9. Limit caffeine and alcohol.

These irritate the bladder and dehydrate you.

10. Goldenseal

Maintains urinary health (possibly fights E.coli, a common UTI-causing bacteria.) A good antioxidant supplement.

And my friend shared this yummy Tabbouleh salad recipe that helps maintain urinary health:

1 box of plain couscous – prep as directed (can also use bulgur or quinoa)
1 c. Chopped tomatoes
1 c. Chopped cucumber
1/4 c. Chopped green onions (or red onions)
1/2 c. Chopped fresh parsley and/or cilantro (yum with some mint too!)
Juice of 1 lemon
1/4 c. really good olive oil
Sea salt to taste

Homemade Sunscreen

It’s ironic to make sunscreen when it’s snowing outside. The end of March and we get snow all day long! I am getting depressed with winter.

I long for sunny days and warmer temperatures and the need for sunscreen! I’m preparing and wishfully thinking.

I love the scent and texture of this natural homemade sunscreen.

It works great, smells great, moisturizes, doesn’t break our skin out, and doesn’t have any of those nasty unpronouncable ingredients.

It’s pretty water-resistant too.

Water Resistant Sunscreen Recipe:

  • 1/2 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Oil (natural SPF of 10+)
  • 1/4 cup Beeswax (try to get some locally for even more health benefits!) This makes it water-resistant.
  • 2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide powder (natural SPF of 20+)
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil (I love the scent of this stuff!)
  • 2 Tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF of 5+)
  • 40-50 drops of Essential Oils (I use about 10 drops each of Lavender, Helichrysum, Myrrh, Roman Chamomile, Carrot Seed)

Melt the oils (except vitamin E and essential oils) over medium heat in a double boiler or in a glass jar and fill the pot halfway up the side of your jar with water. Stir with a wooden spoon. I sometimes just use a disposable plastic spoon or even wooden chopstick! I typically don’t use metal spoons when dealing with essential oils in case they react.

Let the oil mixture cool to almost room temperature, but not yet solidified, then add the vitamin E oil, zinc oxide, and essential oils. After an hour or so, it will solidify to a nice creamy lotion. If you keep it really chilled, you could put this into pretty shaped molds and have a lotion bar.

I found this glass jar in the container section of Walmart. Craft stores have a nice selection too. I love pretty glass jars with good sealable lids!

This homemade natural sunscreen has at least 30 SPF with the essential oils and all those natural ingredients! It smells amazing and is good for your skin – with no scary chemicals.  I have so many friends and family members who are allergic to commercial sunscreens and they have to be really careful when they go out on sunny days. With this, they won’t have to worry so much! And it smells great and doesn’t leave our skin greasy.

We do have to reapply this a bit more often than commercial sunscreens if we’re spending the whole day at a pool or beach.

TAN ENHANCER: You need the sun’s exposure, but not to the point of burning. Try this simple recipe to nourish your skin with healthy oils, while resisting some of the harmful UV rays. As always, use care and common sense with the amount of time your skin is exposed to the sun. RECIPE: Mix 6 T coconut oil with 1 T sesame oil. Rub into the skin. According to Sue Frederick, author of A Mother’s Guide to Raising Healthy Children, sesame oil resists 30% of UV rays while coconut oil blocks out about 20%. Info has not been evaluated by the FDA.

  • 4-5 oz Your favorite natural lotion
  • 1-2 T Zinc Oxide
  • 12-15 drops Carrot Seed essential oil

I like to teach my kids how to practice self-care and be proactive about their health. We keep our cabinet well-stocked with natural remedies.

It’s frugal and smart to try to stay healthy year-round with good food, herbs, supplements, teas, and essential oils.

10 natural remedies:

Chamomile

The tea is good ingested and as a humidifier (Put a towel over a steaming bowl and inhale.)

Eucalyptus

Invigorating. Apply diluted oil to chest, back, feet or diffuse. Great as a shower soother.

Melaleuca

Apply diluted tea tree oil topically or diffuse.

Honey

Great to soothe sore throats and if you can get local product, the pollen could help with any seasonal discomfort. (Lemon is great with honey!)

Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV has so many amazing benefits. I take a shot every morning.

Raw Garlic

Will shock anything right on out of your system. (Take with ACV for extra oomph!)

Raw Onion

Place a slice on feet and cover with socks. Great for fevers and other ailments.

Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint trio

Apply 1 drop of each essential oil diluted with a carrier oil to base of the throat twice a day for allergies, congestion, or sinus irritation.

Inhale on palms or diffuse.

You could also get the fresh herbs and some lemon slices for tea or a cold drink with honey!

Lavender is calming. Lemon and Peppermint are invigorating. This trio smells fresh!

Meat Stock

Add a spoonful of ACV to chicken, turkey, or beef bones to get all the nutrients out. Cover with water. Add veggies like carrot, celery, tomato, aromatics like onions, ginger, garlic, and seasoning like peppercorns and salt and herbs. I often use a slow cooker overnight. Smells and tastes great. Soothing and warm. Freezes well.

Elderberry Syrup

I recommend buying at a health food store rather than foraging. We really like the gummies!

Having a virus doesn’t always mean you have to be miserable.

Some natural remedies can help with the discomfort of fever blisters.

Essential Oils for Cold Sores

The Herpes virus often causes painful outbreaks of blisters when the virus is active, followed by latent periods.

Both the varicella zoster virus (chicken pox and shingles) and herpes simplex type 1 and 2 virus (causes both oral and genital discomfort) belong to the same viral subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae.

Valnet recommends a blend of lemon and geranium.

Tisserand suggests eucalyptus and bergamot.

Wabner says rose or melissa oil could lead to a complete remission of herpes simplex lesions.

Essential oils recommended that could affect symptoms of facial irritation:

  • Bergamot
  • Eucalyptus
  • Geranium
  • Myrrh
  • Peppermint (could relieve itching)
  • Helichrysum
  • Clove
  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • Melissa
  • Lemon
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Thieves blend
  • Ravensara
  • Sage
  • Rosemary
  • Melaleuca quinquenervia (Niaouli)
  • Sandalwood
  • Cypress

A lovely topical essential oil blend (diluted):

  • Geranium oil (8 drops)
  • Lemon oil (3 drops)
  • German Chamomile (6 drops)
  • Melaleuca (8 drops)
  • Lavender (5 drops)

Dietary supplements that might help:

  • L-Lysine (could retard growth of the virus) – check out these foods high in lysine
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin C
  • Cumin
  • Cayenne (capsaicin numbs pain)

My initial introduction to essential oils was to help my eldest daughter with her dry skin. It was suggested I help her from the inside out, so we changed our diet. I bought a healthy digestion oil blend and saw instant results.

There are many additives in skin care products and soaps that often exacerbate dry skin conditions. Check your labels!

After trial and error, we had to eliminate many products and get natural personal care products instead.

My natural hand balm can help dry skin.

Essential Oils we’ve tried to help with dry skin: Cypress, Copaiba, Frankincense, Lavender, Myrrh, Roman Chamomile, Rose, Geranium

Melaleuca oil blend mixed with coconut oil was our best result for this time and place for our daughter.

Of course, I don’t recommend using all of these oils and products at once! Just start with one or a few and see what helps or smells great to you.

We recently made some hand balm with essential oils.

I made Tori a big jar of melaleuca hand balm since her hands are like sandpaper in our dry Utah winters. She feels special with her own jar of hand cream.

Recipe:

Melt in a mason jar in a pot of jar or double boiler:

  • 1/2 c coconut oil
  • 1/4 c shea butter
  • 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa butter

Then mix in some vitamin E and essential oils before it goes back to a solid. I like my stand mixer to whip it good.

I used melaleuca, frankincense, and lavender but there are many essential oils with benefits for our skin!

You can also whip the melted carrier oils in a stand mixer for a fluffy texture. As they cool down, the lotion will retain the air and feel silky.

Eat your way to healthy skin!

We eat nourishing, healthy proteins and fats like gelatin, collagen, liver, and cod liver oil. I take a supplement for specifically for healthy skin.

We’ve tried limiting wheat and dairy because we’ve learned it can have negative effects on skin, but my husband and Tori don’t have skin issues with it. If they overdo it, their moods are affected.
