Do Unto Otters

November 22, 2012 By Jennifer Lambert 2 Comments

I saw this delightful book at the library: Do Unto Otters by Laurie Heller.

We’re studying land animals in science. We’re always needing to brush up on manners. We’re working on Virtues. I figured this book might fit the bill in multiple avenues.

And it’s really cute!

Reading Do Unto Otters
Do Unto Otters

The book’s main character is a worried rabbit whose new neighbors are otters and he’s worried that the otters won’t be good neighbors…because, well, they’re otters. Wise old owl tells the rabbit: Refer to the Golden Rule. Do unto otters as you would have them do unto you.

So the rabbit goes through a list of what would make otters good neighbors, by following the Golden Rule. The rabbit’s list a is a good one for everyone to follow to be a good neighbor.

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12 NIV

I read it to the little kids and they loved it. Then Tori and Katie wanted to peruse it at their leisure while I did tot school with Alex.

“Do not do to others that which would anger you if others did it to you.”―Socrates (the Greek philosopher), circa 470-399 B.C.
Mr. Rabbit’s new neighbors are Otters.
OTTERS!
But he doesn’t know anything about otters. Will they get along? Will they be friends?
Just treat otters the same way you’d like them to treat you, advises Mr. Owl.
In her smart, playful style Laurie Keller highlights how to be a good friend and neighbor―simply follow the Golden Rule!

Treat others the same way you want them to treat you. Luke 6:31 NASB

 How do you teach manners?

I don’t see this often enough.

These two are my quarrelers.

With each other. With their sisters.

So, this is the sweetest moment.

Sharing.

Snuggling.

Silent.

Except for the sounds emitting from the iPad.

A moment of peace.

I used our Geography A-Z book for definitions of the bodies of water.

I plan to review some geography terms and the bodies of water this week as we go over the story of Thanksgiving in detail. It fits well with our history studies of exploration during the Renaissance.

November 15, 2012 By Jennifer Lambert Leave a Comment

Tori is rather obsessed with turkeys, as it is.

She cannot wait until hunting season. We have a friend who is willing to take her to hunt turkeys. I don’t know where she got this idea, but it has persisted for more than a couple years now.

So, when I saw these, I just knew. She loves it!

3 part matching fractions cards. with turkeys!
Turkey Fractions

Tori is reading the number words to make sure they match up with her fraction numbers and pie picture.

Here’s the set-up.

I did help by sorting the cards into three piles. She already completed the match for 1/3. She’s reading the cards for 2 1/2. The orange cards are challenge cards. She did those first, of course. Tori completed all the card matches and then copied the number words and fraction numbers onto her page.

3 Part Fraction Cards

Tori is transferring the words and fraction numbers onto her paper.

The pie pictures already match – to help. She matched the cards all up with very little trouble. I was impressed!

Turkey Fractions Notebooking

I found the Turkey fractions game here.

Here’s a freebie – fun turkey fraction craft . I have it all printed out. I hope to do it later this week.

We’re working on lots of fun Thanksgiving books and activities this month.

What Your Husband Isn’t Telling You Book Review

This blog may contain affiliate links: disclosure.
Please see my suggested resources.

November 14, 2012 By Jennifer Lambert 2 Comments

I was very interested to review What Your Husband Isn’t Telling You by David Murrow.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the title.

My review:

I find this book fascinating!

Of course, I realize it’s mostly a generalization, but I think it offers real insight into the minds of men.

I highlighted and underlined and dog-eared quite a lot of it:
Understanding Your Husband
I quoted several passages from the book for the Sunday school class my husband and I teach on marriage and child training. Jon Acuff also makes fun of popular Christian contemporary music when you can’t tell the difference in the topic, whether it’s a lover or Jesus.

“Men like to sing ‘doing’ songs, but many of today’s praise songs are ‘being’ songs. the old hymns focused on our mission for God, but praise songs focus on our relationship with God. I know a number of guys who arrive late to church every week because they despise ‘Jesus is my boyfriend’ music” (147).

The men were nodding and the ladies laughed, but all the people understood because our church service is old fashioned, playing the old hymns. We know the songs that confuse us on the radio, those “crossover” love songs to Jesus…or the lover. Women don’t mind them as much as men do.

I told my class about the “scrapbook” men unwittingly have in their minds of every sexual experience or visual of women stored away and the enemy loves to recall these images at every opportunity (Ch. 7).

It’s good for women to understand this and help our husbands and sons to flee from temptation by not providing extra fodder for those scrapbooks. Murrow cites it to be like an alcoholic tempted by everything he sees everywhere. It’s available and easy.

Sex is everywhere, bombarding our vision on TV, billboards, the Internet, even the way girls dress at church! <—Click to Tweet!

I explained how men communicate and the wives and mothers of sons had a light bulb moment. One homeschool mom mentioned that this knowledge of how men think and pray and speak will help her teach her sons not to try to copy her ways of speaking, but she can now encourage her husband to pray with her sons and teach them it’s ok not to be so eloquent or use the “prayer speak.” This book can be used to help us teach our sons and help them bond with their dads too!

The book is well-written and straight forward. The couples in my class seemed to agree with everything I mentioned from the book. I highly recommend this book for wives.

About the author:

Church for Men is an organization dedicated to restoring a healthy, life-giving masculine spirit in Christian congregations. It was founded in 2005 by David Murrow, the author of the bestselling book, Why Men Hate Going to Church (Thomas Nelson Publishers).
Murrow’s books have sold more than 100,000 copies, and have been reviewed in newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, the New York Times and many others. Murrow has spoken about the gender gap on the NBC Nightly News, Fox News Channel, and PBS. He’s a frequent guest on Christian TV and radio programs. He’s a contributor to several Christian magazines, both print and online. Murrow has written other books: Why Men Hate Going to Church (2011), How Women Help Men Find God (2007), and The Map: The Way of All Great Men (2010).

I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers for my unbiased review.

We’re loving We Choose Virtues!

Katie picked Self-Control as our virtue this week.

I’ll tell you what: she knows she needs to work on this one! The kids all colored the page and we put them up on our Virtue wall.

Self Control

I found some copy work to go with the Virtues.

Tori loves copy work! This one is tracing and then copying.

Self Control Copywork

I won All About Reading Level 2. We started that last week. It’s perfect because the girls are already well on their way to reading and just need some review.

The girls LOVE it!

After completing lesson 1, Katie told me in her matter of fact way: “Mo-om, thank you for winning us this reading program!”

Now, who hears that every day?

All About Reading Level 2

We also worked on Life of Fred math this week.

Child Training Bible

November 8, 2012 By Jennifer Lambert Leave a Comment

I make sure I supply various Bible study options for my children.

We have devotionals and curriculum and concordances and commentaries.

We have several different translations of the Bible and apps on our devices.

It warms my heart to see my kids reading the Bible on their own!

Bible Reading

Liz is reading the Child Training Bible to Kate.

There were no disciplinary issues.

Just reading together. I love it.

When Katie knows she’s done something wrong, she will get convicted and often bring it to me to read the appropriate verses to her so we can pray.

We don’t use this as a weapon, but as a tool in more gentle parenting.

There’s also a Virtue Training Bible!

What you need to make a Child Training Bible:

  1. CTB Charts
  2. A 9” by 6” Bible
  3. Highlighters
  4. Tabs

It fit in well for Halloween week.

Their different styles of learning fascinate me.

Notice how Tori’s nouns are all lined up, neat in columns.

Kate’s words are in the monster’s mouth all haphazard and messy.

Respect the differences!

Nouns Everywhere

The girls are still writing in their journals every day.

Most of our writing and reading come from the Tapestry of Grace Year 2 curriculum. We’re working our way through First Language Lessons.

Stay tuned for posts on All About Reading Level 2! I just won the program and we’re really excited to get started!

November 5, 2012 By Jennifer Lambert Leave a Comment

When I was at a writing conference, Dad did school and for math, the girls just worked in their Singapore math books.

That’s why there wasn’t a math Monday post last week. And I was still recovering from jet lag.
That’s just fine though. Way to keep it simple!
We did some easy review and fun work.
The girls completed the 5s skip counting mazes.

They cut out, sorted, and pasted 2D and 3D geometric shapes.

The girls have a great number notebook and we do a couple pages each week. Here’s the board with the information they copy. It really helps them to see the number in different forms: tallies, equations, base ten, and domino patterns. They learn to spell the words too!
Ways to Write Number 17Number Book

We’re continuing with our Life of Fred Apples and Singapore math 1B. In mathbooking, we plan to focus more on time and money this month for mastery.
