April 29, 2013 By Jennifer Lambert 6 Comments

We really enjoyed our Wizard of Oz Unit Study.

When I think of Wizards, I immediately think of the Great Oz. The kids and I love that horse in the movie. Check out the meaning of the phrase.

Weren’t there lots of unexpected turns in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz? {You can get all the books on Kindle for almost free!} Kate is already reading the 2nd one!

Of course, the girls and I saw the new Oz the Great and Powerful movie. Opening weekend!

I had loads of fun planning our Oz sensory bin.

Rainbow rice and pasta. Emerald beads in a bucket and bowtie. A wooden rainbow. Oz characters from Grandma and a lion finger puppet.

Oz preschool pack printables.

I downloaded them for Alex. The girls loved it too.

We used the puppets to retell the plot and practiced the reading pages.

The kids are all coloring pages for their lapbooks!

Kate and Tori both loved Dorothy and Tori disliked the Wicked Witch. Kate said the Cowardly Lion was annoying and talked too much. ha!

I really love this one!

Paying it forward. Did you know that last Thursday was The Day?

We discussed how Dorothy was so kind and generous. She could have returned home to Kansas at any time had she known how. She wasn’t resentful at all but truly pleased that she helped her friends.

Tori and Kate wrote some ways she could be kind to others. I love this Pay It Forward printable! I also love it that it has a hot air balloon!

Kate said she could give flowers, food, and toys to friends. She could help with cooking.

Tori wrote that she could bake cakes and pick flowers for neighbors and friends, help Dad in the garden, clean up, help with Alex, and doing chores without being asked.

I found these awesome stickers of original illustrations! Love Dover!

I’d gotten these fun glasses around Easter. Perfect for Oz play. Emerald goggles!

Tori is a “cowardly” reader. I gave her “liquid courage” to help. It’s just mango juice with some sweet and sour. I would’ve added some 7Up {‘cause fizzies always help!}, but we’re all out.

Y’all know I love notebooking. And nature. And trees.

IT’S SPRING!

How good can it get?

The warm and sunny weather has found us longing to get outside and soak it all up.

I have stacks of printed notebooking pages on spring but we’ll have to wait for a rainy day to sit at the table and do those! Time for a spring nature study!

I love tulips! We have cheerful red and yellow tulips popping up in the flower beds.

Intentional Blogging

April 26, 2013 By Jennifer Lambert 6 Comments

Last night I tweeted:

“God owns my blog. He makes my connections and brings me where I need to be. I have some amazing stories about that.”

Several asked about the stories.

To God be the glory.

intentional blogger

Background info first:

When I first began blogging in December 2010, it was primarily a scrapbook of my children. Because I’m not a scrapbooker. I have several Rubbermaid tubs full of items that I should scrapbook, but this is so much easier.

But looking back, I can see the plans God had for me. and for my blogs.

God has grown me – through blogging and through my connections with other bloggers and readers.

My faith increased as I learned to let go and let Him guide my words. As I let Him guide my priorities – marriage and parenting and homeschooling – and blogging.

I want to be an intentional blogger.

If the blog began as a memory book, I am now chronicling a faith journey.

**Tweet This!**

Here’s the Google definition of Intentional: “Adjective. Done on purpose; deliberate. Synonyms: deliberate – wilful – willful – purposeful – intended.”

I love it. And I am already willful. ha!

This last year, as I learned more about blogging and listened to God’s will for my blogs, homeschool, life… I realize that it all belongs to Him. I am His steward of these words and He brings readers, income, opportunities in His timing.

Be humble in the presence of God’s mighty power, and he will honor you when the time comes. God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him.

1 Peter 5:6-7 CEV

I knew long ago that I am not a salesgirl. It’s not my spiritual gift, for sure.

So, I know that I must be authentic to endorse a product or book. I must love it to encourage readers to buy it. I do lots of reviews and some products aren’t my favorites but I hope everyone knows where my heart lies. When you click on an affiliate link, it goes to support my blog ministry – and my family. I don’t want to lose your trust by spamming you with lots of ads for products I don’t even use. I pray hard over the posts I write and the items I mention on my blogs and social media are things we use and love (or have in the past) or that I think will be helpful to readers.

Now for the stories!

  • God maneuvered me to Allume last year. It wasn’t even in my radar. {I’ve been disappointed to not be able to attend any writing and homeschool conferences these past few months, but hopefully, someday, I will get to go to others. any sponsors out there?} I connected with several authors at Allume and I’ve joined their eBook launch teams because I believe in them and their dreams, in addition to loving the books. These connections have grown into amazingly beautiful friendships. I am forever astonished at how these bloggers lift up each other. It’s not about competition, but cooperation.

  • At Allume, I mentioned offhandedly to a couple blogger friends that I’d love to get into editing and how would I do that? They took me under their wings and helped me begin my business. I owe everything to their promotion and trust and to God. I have been honored to edit several brilliant eBooks over the past few months. God appointments!

  • Recently, I’ve had a couple bloggers out of the blue contact me to be a VA. I hadn’t even begun to advertise VA services. I wasn’t ready, but apparently, God was, and nudged them to contact me. It’s new and a little scary. Trusting is hard – and learning to balance a new schedule is tough too!

  • I began using essential oils for improving our family’s health and to go in a more natural direction. I feel led to minister on my blogs in this area. My husband and I were great skeptics and I’ll tell you that it’s been life-changing and God has been opening many doors for us with this ministry opportunity.

everything

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…

Colossians 3:23

It’s all God. Do everything with His heart in mind.

Join me in being intentional in blogging – in everything.

Essential Oils for Growing Pains

This blog may contain affiliate links: disclosure.
Please see my suggested resources.

April 26, 2013 By Jennifer Lambert 25 Comments

My tween daughter had some growing pains lately. It became very uncomfortable.

Her mobility was poor and it resulted in very tight tendons and muscles.

eldest daughter

Here’s my eldest daughter 10 months ago. She’s 12.5 years old.

I’ve been using essential oils on her since January.

We first became concerned about her a year or so ago. She walked on her toes and said her feet and legs hurt. She was unable to place her heels on the floor.

I got her new shoes, in the correct size. She hadn’t told me for several months that her boots were too small. She loved those boots that much. I felt like a bad mom.

It didn’t completely help the problem.

So, we took her to the doctor. And another. And then a specialist.

Some doctors said she needed surgery on her legs.

Her tendons were too tight. She had hammer toes. Her spinal column was too short. Her ankles were weak. She needed pins in her ankles to straighten and strengthen.

They all said different, scary things, but they all wanted surgery.

What we did instead of surgery:

We bought her yet another pair of shoes – expensive, super stiff-soled walking shoes with rigid ankle brace inserts.

We did yoga. Pi-yo. The whole family encouraged, helped, participated. All the other kids wanted to do stretches too. It was great.

She wasn’t very successful at running track last season because she was almost in tears after practices and therefore didn’t do well in the races. She was in constant pain.

So we went the physical therapy route for a while, last spring and summer. It helped some. They ended our sessions with the comment that she wasn’t progressing because she feared pain, even though she wasn’t experiencing it any more. They had done all they could for her.

It seemed strange that she could run barefoot through the yard just fine.

I think she was improving, but when she thought about it, that fear of pain came back. When she didn’t think, she walked and ran fine.

We let it drop for a while since she wasn’t complaining of pain.

Absence of pain isn’t always the best answer.

Then, I noticed that she seemed to be getting worse again, instead of better. She still walked up on her tippy toes and cried that it hurt to place her feet flat on the floor.

I still remind her nightly to do her stretches, assigned to her by the PT. We do yoga most mornings and more stretches. I encouraged her to walk barefoot in the house and yard, reminding her that it’s heel to toe, and even to stomp, if it helps.

A real miracle at work has been the essential oils. I massage her legs and spine with the oils. We begin and end with a wonderful essential oil blend (it’s been called “chiropractor in a bottle”). It’s supposed to help her body naturally realign the spine and nerves. Basil, Wintergreen, Cypress, Marjoram, Oregano, Peppermint, Thyme, and a few other oils and blends are helping manage her leg pain.

And I pray over her.

Every night. Every morning. Multiple times per day. For physical as well as spiritual and mental healing.

When it became possible in our budget, my husband took her to his chiropractor. He also uses essential oils in his practice and is very into natural methods.

The chiropractor “turned on” all her core muscles. They were all nonfunctioning! That certainly was much of the problem. Only five sessions were needed to get everything working properly. He affirmed that she should continue to do the stretches prescribed by her PT. Now I know she’s really on the road to recovery.

And she is now in Civil Air Patrol – with all the marching and standing at attention, it’s all coming together and her posture is much improved. She passed both her physical training tests last month, running 1.5 miles well under the necessary time, along with many sit ups and push ups.

No pain. The combat boots help her stand straight with her heels down. And the good peer pressure to conform to the squadron helps her to try harder to stand at attention well.

Here she is on Easter morning. Her posture is so much better than it was!

Essential oils for growing pains

I am so thankful that surgery wasn’t necessary.

I just felt in my heart that we should look to alternative medicine to heal and her growing body would adjust itself with time and therapy.

We’re still praying. Still doing stretches, still monitoring and still massaging with essential oils.

Still encouraging her and thanking God that there’s been no need for surgery.

Math Monday: Place Value

April 22, 2013 By Jennifer Lambert 3 Comments

Both Tori and Kate agreed to complete 2-3 lessons and be done with Singapore math this school year!

Tori uses some Montessori beads to help with place values. I also made some color-coded number cards to help with place value.

place value lesson

A visual learner, Tori was struggling with completing the subtraction lesson without the beads and number cards. After I showed her the “picture,” she aced the lesson.

Kate started out doing fine without the beads, but she wanted to do the fun stuff too.

Both girls were super excited to complete their Singapore math 1B workbooks.

Tori was so excited to run her first 5K with Dad Friday afternoon. She got dressed right after breakfast and asked me if it was time to go yet. all. day. long.

So, imagine my disappointment when we arrived at the destination for her run and my husband stood there.

quite alone.

It was canceled.

Due to weather.

It was cool and partly cloudy and had been sprinkling earlier.

But canceled?

I was so upset.

Tori was just fine about it and asked to run laps anyway.

She’s our sweet and compliant one. She is so sensitive to others’ needs and rarely causes problems. She didn’t care as long as she got to run with her daddy.

My daughter showed me up with her maturity over disappointment.

sweet one

I’m sure that should teach me something, but I’m still upset.

She was running her fourth lap when I left for home. Dad stayed with her.

I was seething.

It just made a bad day worse.

Having a defiant three year old doesn’t help anything.

It’s one of those days when I didn’t thaw anything out for dinner and we have to get takeout and the budget’s maxed and payday is still almost two weeks away.

My husband mentioned right before I pulled out of the parking spot that I shouldn’t snap at him just because I’m frustrated with the kids and the race being canceled.

Hrmph.

Yeah, so things didn’t go as planned.

And apparently a seven year old girl can handle disappointment better than I can.

Did I mention I hate “I told you so’s”?

Check out the rest of the Crew.

I got 7 photo boxes at Michael’s last year during a major sale.

Alex used our Arctic and Antarctic box during our winter and snow unit a couple months ago. And you can see the girls in action with Kindergarten Antarctica last year.

Alex recently started asking questions about African animals, so I chose to capitalize on the learning excitement to create a unit for the kids!

We have subscriptions to Ranger Rick, Zoobooks, and all the National Geographic magazines. I found the ones that went with Africa and put them in a basket.

Here is the box in progress. I cut out all the flags for matching and we have more printables now, including the lovely paper doll above.

Montessori Geography Africa Continent Box

I gathered some fun books from the library and printed out some fun activities and coloring pages.

Alex loves playing with the animals and coloring.

Tori  and Kate loved coloring and doing mazes and studying animals. Kate wants to work with animals when she grows up. She carries around an animal encyclopedia and just about has it memorized.

We’ve been watching Nature on Netflix and the girls love telling me what we’ve already studied – animals, climates, places. I love it.

Love Your Neighbor

April 16, 2013 By Jennifer Lambert 1 Comment

We are commanded to love.

Who?

All of us. Each and every one. To love.

To love.

To love whom?

Everyone.

Love Everyone.

It’s real simple, y’all.

Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14

http://www.etsy.com/shop/TrulyLoveThyNeighbor/

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.

John 13:34-35

Love is a decision.

I read posts all the time about loving our spouses and children. If we need to be admonished to do that, how much more must we be reminded to love everyone else?

In light of everything in the news lately, I am disheartened. So much hate.

But Christians must not compromise. We must love.

We are the examples.

Little eyes and ears are always present.

What example are you setting if you love one and not the other?

What do your children think if they are confused by unforgiveness or bitterness?

We’ve traveled and moved all over and seen many different peoples and cultures.

We learn about them and their history. This is how we learn not to fear differences.

This is how we learn to love.

How can you love your neighbor today?

We are called to Love Everyone.
